Book Review: Lilu makes Diyas by Devika Joglekar

Diwali is just over. I had many plans of decorating the house and our garden. But the kids didnt seem interested in the usual art-craft stuff. 

To get the kids in the decoration mood, I read to them : Lilu Makes Diyas by Devika Joglekar

Story:

Lilu is a little girl who is excited to decorate the house for Diwali. She plans to make Diyas taught by her teacher in school. Her lil brother Kuku too wants to help. Get to know step by step process of how to make Wheat flour baked diyas. The book gives exact recipe and ideas to decorate the Diyas. 

We could make the Diyas and they actually turned out great. Our Diya pictures got a lot of praises and inspired many to buy the book and make the diyas. That was the biggest achievement for us this Diwali.

What I liked:

This is a lovely short book about how Lilu and her lil brother Kuku make Diyas. 

The story shows step by step how to make lovely, eco friendly Diya's which kids can make with lil help from parents. I liked this concept. The recipe is easy to make. 

The ingredients being simple and found at home, my kids were excited to make our own Diyas. 

Eco friendly as wheat is used. Sustainable as the Diyas can be reused and dont leak oil unlike mud Diyas. I have tested this so can confidently say this.

The story is of perfect length for lil kids to read or be read-aloud to. 

The story showed how a lil girl with a creative mind set about to make colorful diyas taught by her teacher. She included her lil brother too and patiently let him work with her. 

The illustrations are big, colorful and obviously cheerful. We enjoyed watching the lil cat's antics too. The illustrations have a Maharashtrian touch along with being Indian. My daughter pointed out its a similar Rangoli her Aaji makes near Door. Small things which makes the story relatable.

Devika Joglekar has an entire Book series of Lilu books. I am eager to read Lilu's Lantern, Lilu's Rangoli and Lilu makes Laddoos(not ladoo as they pronounce in Hindi). 

  

About the Author:

Devika is a veteran animator and illustrator based in San Francisco Bay Area, CA. She has been bringing dreams to life through her labor of love, miheika.com. Miheika specializes in Clear Line style illustration and 2D animation. Over the years, Devika has infused life into several childrens' story books and graphic novels, through her signature illustration and animation work.
