Lego is NOT just a toy. If you have played with Lego even for a few minutes you will realise how addictive and mind stimulating it can be.
You can follow the manual or make your own creations but both ways you will amazed at the numerous concepts that come into play here.
You have to visit Sundaybricks:
If you stay around Navi Mumbai
If you have kids
If your kids Love Lego
If you want to do something interesting on a Sunday :)
About Sunday bricks:
I had read about Sundaybricks, a Lego workshop, from an Instagram friend. It is conducted in Vashi, was a plus point for me.
I contacted Mrunal Shah, the founder of Sundaybricks, and finally this Sunday 2nd Sept 2018, we attended one of the Sunday sessions aptly called Sundaybricks.
These workshops are suitable for 6-10yr olds. But with Lego you cant categorize age limits either minimum or maximum ;)
They have 2 types of workshops.
There is the One Sunday workshop (90 mins) where one theme is given to the kids depending on their age and experience with Lego.
Next is the 5 day workshop (2 hours each) where the kids over 5 Sundays help make an entire Lego city using all the Lego themes.
They organise different themes every few sessions. This time the attraction was a remote controlled bullet train made from Lego. Next time its going to be StarWars.
A few pictures from today's workshop.
What I liked:
My son, his father and grandfather love Lego’s. My son started with store bought building blocks. His grandfather got him a Lego-Duplo set which was a favorite for months. He went back to the building blocks making different structures and machines, so we got him another set to help him build bigger things.
Last year my husband got him a Lego set. His grandfather gifted him a Firetruck Lego model on his 4th birthday. As soon as the guests left both grandfather and grandson sat down for hours to make the Firetruck :D
Looking at the complex structures, our constant instructions to play wisely and not lose any of the tiny pieces my son lost interest in it. He was back to his building blocks.
This summer the neighbors grand kids came down from the USA. Dhruv, become our friend and big dada (brother). My son tried to copy all that Dhruv did. Major part of it was building Lego models. So now since school began he tries to make small creations out of a few pieces. They are sometimes mini robots or mini military tanks or submarines etc whatever his imagination lets him makes out of them.
At Sundaybricks, Mrunal let my 5yr old start with basic theme and model. I was skeptical if my son who prefers to make things on his own will be able to follow the instructions in the manual or not. I was surprised to see he had made the model given to him and some more of his imaginary stuff with the additional blocks.
The older kids who come for the 5 day workshops had made a mini Lego city with a remote controlled bullet train running around it. Listening to the kids discuss amongst themselves concepts of friction, radius of the curves of the tracks, the elevation for the pillars, planning of the city areas etc was pleasantly surprising for me. Guess I have to wait & watch for a few more years to really know how kids these days are way smarter than we used to be.
A glimpse of the final model made today:
Please ignore my baby's babbling in the end :)
Sundaybricks employs the STEAM methodology. STEAM is using Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics concepts to create, communicate and think.
Playing with Lego is not just a pass time. It helps in visualizing an object in 3D dimension. It makes one aware of concepts of mass, weight, gravity and force to be considered and calculations to be done accordingly. Lego can help one center, be calm and patient. It helps challenge ones mental ability to create something new every time with the same set of pieces. I am sure there are many more positive points for playing with Legos.
Sundaybricks keeps adding different themes to their workshop. Each kid gets a different theme each time. They have more than 5 lakh Lego pieces, so you can be assured your kid is not going to fall short of pieces when building his creations.
Contact them on Facebook, Instagram or their Website for booking a session. Mrunal Shah and the staff at Sundaybricks is very attentive, patient with each kids innumerable questions, always motivating the kids, very passionate about Lego so the kids adore him.
My kid didn’t want to leave Sundaybricks. He woke me up on a Sunday at 6am so as not to be late for the Lego class :p. He now wants to make his own creations to show Mrunal Sir. Hope the Lego love stays strong always.
Thanks Sundaybricks and Mrunal Shah for accommodating us for a session. I am sure we will be back for more soon.
Hope you all like this concept. Let us know your comments about the workshop :)
Bye. Take care.
