Do re me fa so-Theory for Video

Hi Good day!
Interesting + disappointing + feeling helpful towards people who just watched the Video of Do re me fa so,... without knowing what it is about.

Watch the video :
Video-Do re me fa so

Let me tell you, if you can add in to this, please do that:

This is a song 'Do re me fa so la te to'.
Its from the movie: Sound of music

This movie as the name suggests is about music. Here the nanny or teacher for children in the house is teaching them basics of music.

When you say basics, you have to start with notes which are Do re me ... .
In indian music, notes are Sur which are Sa re ga ma ...

Sing them as Do re me fa or Sa re ga ma ... You will see or notice they are the same :)

The teacher in the song is giving examples of similar sounding words for each note so that its easier for the children to remember. So it goes like:

Doe, a deer, a female deer
Ray, a drop of golden sun
Me, a name I call myself
Far, a long, long way to run .....

I still remember bits & pieces of the movie we were shown in school by our Sisters(Nuns) during a free lecture when I guess was in 2-3rd standard. We had been taught to sing the song by the same sister few days before. Imagine how amazed we were to see the video of the same song & we could relate to the music, words, the actions, expressions we were taught. To the amazement of Sister we all started singing along in chorus & had her repeat it couple of times :)

They say Music has no barriers. Its true, see how the naming changes but the music remains the same & can be understood by one & all.

Here are the words/lyrics: Maria is the teacher's name & the other are the children

Let's start at the very beginning
A very good place to start
When you read you begin with A-B-C
When you sing you begin with do-re-mi

Do-re-mi, do-re-mi
The first three notes just happen to be
Do-re-mi, do-re-mi

[Maria:]
Do-re-mi-fa-so-la-ti
[spoken]
Let's see if I can make it easy

Doe, a deer, a female deer
Ray, a drop of golden sun
Me, a name I call myself
Far, a long, long way to run
Sew, a needle pulling thread
La, a note to follow Sew
Tea, a drink with jam and bread
That will bring us back to Do (oh-oh-oh)

[Maria and Children:]
[Repeat above verse twice]

[Maria:]
Do-re-mi-fa-so-la-ti-do
So-do!

[Maria: (spoken)]
Now children, do-re-mi-fa-so and so on
are only the tools we use to build a song.
Once you have these notes in your heads,
you can sing a million different tunes by mixing them up.
Like this.

So Do La Fa Mi Do Re
[spoken]
Can you do that?
[Children:]
So Do La Fa Mi Do Re
[Maria:]
So Do La Ti Do Re Do
[Children:]
So Do La Ti Do Re Do
[Maria:]
[spoken]
Now, put it all together.

[Maria and Children:]
So Do La Fa Mi Do Re, So Do La Ti Do Re Do
[Maria:]
[spoken]
Good!
[Brigitta:]
[spoken]
But it doesn't mean anything.
[Maria:]
[spoken]
So we put in words. One word for every note. Like this.

When you know the notes to sing
You can sing most anything
[spoken]
Together!

[Maria and Children:]
When you know the notes to sing
You can sing most anything

Doe, a deer, a female deer
Ray, a drop of golden sun
Me, a name I call myself
Far, a long, long way to run
Sew, a needle pulling thread
La, a note to follow Sew
Tea, a drink with jam and bread
That will bring us back to Do

Do Re Mi Fa So La Ti Do
Do Ti La So Fa Mi Re

[Children:]
Do Mi Mi
Mi So So
Re Fa Fa
La Ti Ti
[Repeat above verse 4x as Maria sings]

[Maria:]
When you know the notes to sing
You can sing most anything

[Maria and Children:]
Doe, a deer, a female deer
Ray, a drop of golden sun
Me, a name I call myself
Far, a long, long way to run
Sew, a needle pulling thread
La, a note to follow Sew
Tea, a drink with jam and bread
That will bring us back to

[Maria:]
[Children:]

Do . . . So Do
Re . . . La Fa
Mi . . . Mi Do
Fa . . . Re
So . . . So Do
La . . . La Fa
Ti . . . La So Fa Mi Re
Ti Do - oh - oh Ti Do -- So Do

:) Watch the video again & read the lyrics too. Now you will have more fun like I did.

If you check on youtube you will find many more videos where the song is played in stations & all people start dancing. This is totally not on the spot, they rehearse 2-3 times before & then do this Live for pure fun. I am glad they did it.

If we were shown this video in school, the next sports day/teachers day/annual day we would have choreographed dance on the song making all the girls participate. What Fun! I still miss my school days :( ;)

Like Vrushali posted in her comment: The hindi movie Parichay is inspired by Sound of music.
